Planning, preparation and the turn over of soil

Another day at the school, and another day of clearing the area. The roots needed to be cleared so that we could start to turn over the soil. We headed down to the school ready to start fully clearing the area so that our project could start to take shape. We began by clearing any of the remaining roots from the trees and branches. As we were clearing the roots, we realised that there were considerably more than we first anticipated and that this might taking longer than we first thought. Therefore, we all pitched in to ensure that the area was cleared before the end of the day.

After the root infestation was eventually under control, we realised that it would be best if we started to turn over the soil. However, it was getting late and it became apparent that we would not get around to completing the whole area. Despite this, we still managed to turn over half of the area, leaving the rest for the next time we came.

At the end of the day we started to discuss our ideas and we thought about what we would need to buy in the forthcoming weeks. We had a rough idea of what we wanted the project to look like, and we all had individual ideas about what we could include. Following on from week 1 we knew we needed to include an allotment area and a seated area. So, we roughly planned that we would have sleepers around most of the garden, with a bench in the middle. But, we were still unsure about what was going to go behind the shed.

This had been a positive day at the school, as the area looked tidier than last week, we now had ideas about what to do for next week and what items we needed to bring to the school when we return.
